It’s not unusual for braces to break during treatment. After all, they get a lot of wear and tear. However, many people overlook the relationship between orthodontics and gum health. While braces can lead to a more even bite and a beautiful smile, they also require extra care to maintain healthy gums and prevent periodontal diseases.

How Braces Affect the Gums

Braces work by applying continuous pressure on the teeth, gradually moving them into their correct positions. This movement affects not only the teeth but also the surrounding gum tissues and bones. While this process is generally safe, it can sometimes lead to temporary inflammation or discomfort in the gums.

1. Increased Risk of Gum Inflammation (Gingivitis)

One of the most common gum-related issues during orthodontic treatment is gingivitis. Braces create small spaces where food particles and plaque can accumulate, making it harder to clean the teeth effectively. If not properly managed, this buildup can lead to gum inflammation, swelling, and bleeding.

2. Risk of Gum Recession

In some cases, excessive pressure from braces can cause the gums to recede, exposing the tooth roots. This can lead to increased tooth sensitivity and, in severe cases, a higher risk of periodontal disease. Gum recession is more common in patients with thin gum tissue or pre-existing gum issues.

3. Improved Gum Health in the Long Term

Despite the temporary challenges, properly aligned teeth contribute to better gum health in the long run. Straight teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of plaque buildup and periodontal disease. By improving bite alignment, orthodontic treatment can also reduce excessive pressure on certain teeth, preventing gum and bone damage over time.

Tips for Maintaining Healthy Gums with Braces

To prevent gum problems during orthodontic treatment, proper oral hygiene and care are essential. Here are some key tips:
• Brush Thoroughly: Use an orthodontic toothbrush or an electric toothbrush to clean around brackets and wires. Brushing at least twice a day is crucial.
• Floss Daily: Special floss threaders or water flossers can help remove plaque between teeth and around the braces.
• Use Antibacterial Mouthwash: A fluoride or antibacterial mouthwash can help reduce plaque and bacteria in hard-to-reach areas.
• Maintain Regular Dental Checkups: Visiting the dentist and orthodontist regularly ensures that any gum issues are detected and treated early.
• Avoid Sugary and Sticky Foods: These types of foods can lead to plaque buildup and increase the risk of gum inflammation.e many reasons why you
AL-Mustaqbal University is the first university in Iraq
