A Scientific Article by Instructor Dr. Karrar Majeed Obeid, titled: Chemistry: The Foundation of Industrial Development and Sustainable Development Chemistry is one of the most important fundamental sciences that has directly contributed to human progress and the development of modern societies. It focuses on studying the composition, properties, and reactions of matter, making it a key pillar of industrial advancement. Progress in chemical sciences has sparked a true industrial revolution, with significant impacts on various aspects of economic, social, and environmental life. Industrial development is one of the most prominent outcomes of applying chemistry. Chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries rely on chemical principles to transform raw materials into high-value products. For instance, chemistry has enabled the development of new materials such as polymers, alloys, and nanomaterials, which are now used in engineering, medical, and technological industries, thereby enhancing production efficiency and product quality. Chemistry also plays a central role in supporting sustainable development through what is known as green chemistry, which aims to design chemical processes and products that minimize the use of hazardous substances and reduce waste generation. This approach helps decrease the environmental impact of industries and improves the efficiency of energy and natural resource consumption, achieving a balance between industrial progress and environmental protection. In the energy sector, chemistry has contributed to developing alternative and clean energy sources, such as solar cells, biofuels, and energy storage technologies, helping reduce reliance on fossil fuels and limit harmful emissions. Chemistry has also played a key role in improving water and air treatment technologies, addressing environmental challenges and enhancing quality of life. Chemistry’s importance extends to supporting food and health security through the development of environmentally friendly fertilizers, safe pesticides, and the production of medicines and vaccines, thereby improving human health and increasing agricultural productivity sustainably. This highlights the close integration between chemistry and other sciences in achieving sustainable development goals. In conclusion, chemistry represents the scientific foundation of industrial development and a central pillar for achieving sustainable development. Through its diverse applications, chemistry contributes to economic progress, environmental protection, and improved quality of life, making it a strategic science for the future of humanity and comprehensive development.
