Introduction Analytical chemistry plays a vital role in forensic science, where it is used to analyze criminal evidence and identify chemical substances found at crime scenes. These analyses help in crime investigation, determination of causes of death, and linking chemical evidence to individuals or events with high scientific accuracy. Principle of Chemical Analysis in Forensics Forensic chemical analysis is based on measuring physical or chemical properties of suspected materials, such as light absorption, chromatographic separation, or spectral signals. These measurements are used to identify substances and determine their concentrations. Components of Chemical Analysis 1. Analytical Instruments Forensic laboratories use instruments such as UV–Vis spectrophotometers, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, gas chromatography (GC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). 2. Samples Forensic samples include blood, urine, hair, drugs, poisons, and explosive residues. 3. Reagents and Standards Specific reagents are used for drug and poison detection, along with standard solutions for instrument calibration. Types of Analysis 1. Qualitative Analysis Used to identify the type of substances such as drugs, poisons, or explosives. 2. Quantitative Analysis Used to determine the concentration of substances in biological or forensic samples. 3. Trace Analysis Focused on detecting very small amounts of materials such as gunshot residues or toxins. Practical Examples Alcohol analysis in blood using UV–Vis or GC. Poison detection using HPLC. Gunshot residue analysis using IR or GC. Advantages Analytical chemistry provides high accuracy, reliable results, and strong scientific evidence for forensic investigations. Limitations These analyses require advanced instruments, skilled analysts, and high operational costs. Conclusion Analytical chemistry is essential in forensic science, supporting justice by providing accurate and objective analysis of criminal evidence.
