Higher education is undergoing significant transformation due to the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence tools, directly influencing the formation of students’ academic identity. Academic identity extends beyond academic achievement to include critical thinking skills, intellectual independence, research ethics, and scholarly self-expression. With AI tools becoming integrated into learning environments, it is essential to reconsider how this identity is shaped. Artificial intelligence empowers students by providing rapid access to information, data analysis capabilities, and support in academic writing. Intelligent systems offer instant feedback and personalized learning experiences tailored to individual needs. AI-driven educational platforms such as Coursera create interactive environments that promote self-directed learning and continuous development. However, excessive reliance on AI tools raises concerns regarding academic integrity and intellectual independence. Unregulated use may weaken critical thinking skills or reduce individual research effort. Therefore, guiding students toward ethical and responsible AI use is essential, positioning it as a supportive tool rather than a substitute for human reasoning. Building a balanced academic identity in the age of artificial intelligence requires integrating digital literacy skills, fostering awareness of technological limitations, and reinforcing academic integrity values. Ultimately, AI can serve as a powerful enabler in shaping a mature academic identity—provided it is embedded within an educational framework that promotes critical thinking and intellectual responsibility.
