Under the patronage of the President of Al-Mustaqbal University and the direct supervision of the Dean of the College of Nursing, the College of Nursing / Pediatric Nursing Branch organized a scientific workshop headed by Dr. Mahdi Saleh Hadi, Acting Head of the Branch, entitled:
“Nursing Intervention and Community Awareness: A Roadmap to Address the Challenges of Autism Spectrum Disorder in Iraq.”
The workshop aimed to highlight the role of nursing staff in the early diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, rehabilitation, and providing psychological support for families with children affected by the disorder. It also focused on enhancing community awareness and exchanging scientific and practical experiences among specialists.
The workshop included several distinguished scientific sessions. Professor Dr. Qahtan Hadi Hussein delivered a lecture discussing the epidemiological status of autism spectrum disorder in Iraq and addressed the most significant environmental and genetic challenges associated with it. Dr. Burhan Hadi Darab also presented a lecture titled “Family Psychological Support and the Nurse’s Role as a Psychological Guide for Parents in Coping with Shock.”
Dr. Mahdi Saleh Hadi delivered another lecture on how nurses can detect early autism indicators during primary healthcare visits (Red Flags), emphasizing the importance of early detection in improving rehabilitation and therapeutic intervention outcomes.
The workshop also witnessed active participation from students through several practical themes, including learning about the application of rehabilitation programs such as ABA and TEACCH within the Iraqi context, which contributes to strengthening their professional and practical skills.
The workshop program also included a practical activity for students and healthcare staff to enhance their skills in using early screening tools such as M-CHAT, as well as discussing the major challenges faced by Iraqi families with children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
At the conclusion of the workshop, the college administration expressed its appreciation to the lecturers and participants for their valuable contributions to the success of the scientific activity, emphasizing the importance of such events in promoting scientific and professional awareness about autism spectrum disorder and supporting efforts to improve healthcare and psychological services for children in Iraq.
