the Department of Dialysis Kidney Techniques at the College of Health and Medical Techniques – Al-Mustaqbal University organized an online educational workshop entitled: “Swimming in Rivers: Between Summer Recreation and Kidney Health Risks Amid Water Scarcity” on Thursday, March 26, 2026. The workshop was delivered by Ms. Anssam Fadhil Mahmoud and Ms. Tabarak Ahmed Turki.
Within the framework of promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being and Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, the workshop presented a comprehensive scientific overview highlighting the importance of swimming as one of the most common recreational and sporting activities during the summer season.
The workshop also shed light on the impact of rising temperatures, declining river water levels, and drought conditions, along with the associated increase in water pollution levels resulting from water scarcity. Furthermore, it addressed the health risks arising from contaminated water and the potential diseases that may affect humans, particularly those impacting kidney function.
The workshop aimed to enhance awareness among students and community members regarding the risks of swimming in rivers under conditions of water scarcity and drought, while also fostering their cultural and health-related knowledge in ways that support disease prevention.
This initiative forms part of the university’s ongoing efforts to promote health and environmental awareness, as well as to protect young people from the risks associated with river swimming, including drowning incidents and waterborne diseases resulting from pollution.
