Emerging pollutants are considered among the most serious modern environmental challenges. These are substances that were not adequately monitored in the past, such as pharmaceutical residues, pesticides, and microplastics. Their presence in water poses a direct threat to human health and ecosystems. The danger of these pollutants lies in the difficulty of detecting them using traditional methods, in addition to their cumulative effects on living organisms. Objectives: Identify types of emerging pollutants Assess their environmental and health impacts Propose methods to reduce them Methodology: Studies rely on chemical analysis of water and the use of biological indicators to determine the impact on living organisms. Steps of Environmental Risk Assessment: The risk assessment process is based on several key stages: Hazard Identification Identifying the pollutant Understanding its toxic properties and effects Exposure Assessment Determining the concentration of the pollutant in water Identifying how it reaches living organisms (drinking, absorption, food chain) Dose-Response Assessment Studying the relationship between the amount of the substance and its health effects Risk Characterization Integrating previous data to determine the overall level of risk Environmental and Health Impacts: On the environment: Disruption of ecological balance Death of aquatic organisms Bioaccumulation of toxins in the food chain On humans: Hormonal disorders Antibiotic resistance Long-term chronic diseases Methods to Reduce Risks: Improving water treatment technologies Reducing the use of harmful chemicals Developing strict environmental regulations Using modern technologies such as artificial intelligence to monitor pollutants Environmental risk assessment of emerging pollutants plays a vital role in protecting water resources and ensuring their sustainability. With scientific advancement, it has become essential to integrate modern technologies with environmental policies to address this issue. Al-Mustaqbal University is the First University in Iraq
