Al-Mustaqbal University Continues Sustainability Week Activities with a Scientific Forum on Water Security in Iraq

On Monday, April 13, 2016, Al-Mustaqbal University continued the activities of the second day of the Fourth International Sustainability Week 2026, which included a specialized scientific forum on water security in Iraq. The forum was held under the patronage of the University President, Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, and under the direct supervision of the Dean of the College of Science, Assistant Professor Dr. Furat Hamza Al-Sultani. The event was attended by a distinguished group of academics, experts, and representatives of governmental institutions, in addition to the presence of the Head of the Department of Medical Biotechnology in a panel discussion held ضمن the forum, aiming to enhance awareness of water challenges and sustainable management strategies. The forum addressed key issues related to the status of water resources in Iraq and the challenges facing this vital sector, particularly in light of climate change and the increasing demand for water. It also discussed strategic solutions to achieve water security and ensure the sustainability of resources for future generations. The forum also witnessed extensive discussions on groundwater and ways to manage it sustainably, emphasizing the importance of reducing violations and regulating its use according to legal frameworks to preserve this vital resource from depletion and ensure its continuity. Representatives from the Ministry of Water Resources participated in the forum, including the Director General of the General Commission for Groundwater, Dr. Maytham Ali Al-Ghanmi, the Head of Planning Department, Dr. Amir Jawad Kadhim, and the Director of Water Resources in Babil, Dr. Muthanna Shaalan Al-Watifie. They presented scientific insights on groundwater management, strategic planning of water resources, and the current situation of water resources in Babil Province. The forum also included participation from Al-Imam Al-Sadiq University / Najaf Branch, where Dr. Kareem Ghafel Al-Mutawki delivered a scientific contribution highlighting the academic and research dimensions of water security and the role of educational institutions in supporting water-related studies and providing scientific solutions. The session was moderated by Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Lateef Hussein, who effectively organized the discussion topics and enriched dialogue among participants, enhancing the exchange of expertise between academic and governmental sectors. This forum aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and Goal 13 (Climate Action), by focusing on water resource management and addressing the impacts of climate change.
