An instructor in the Department of Communication Engineering at Al-Mustaqbal University, the first-ranked private university in Iraq, Dr. Noor Abdul Karim Mohammed, presented a case study titled “Violent Extremism” on 13-4, as part of the activities of the Fourth Future Sustainability Week held on campus, with the participation of a number of students and researchers. The study was presented in the form of a scientific poster.
The study aimed to raise awareness and analyze the phenomenon of extremism as one of the complex social issues affecting community security and stability, highlighting the role of modern media and technology, particularly the internet, in spreading extremist ideas among young people.
It also examined the causes and factors leading to extremism, including psychological, social, and economic aspects, in addition to the influence of the surrounding environment and weak intellectual awareness. The results showed a general awareness among students regarding the dangers of extremism, alongside the need to strengthen awareness and prevention programs within the academic environment.
In conclusion, the study emphasized the importance of universities in addressing this issue by promoting moderation, critical thinking, and adopting comprehensive strategies based on cooperation between educational and community institutions, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions).
