What is computer vision syndrome?
Eye problems resulting from the use of computers fall under the heading (computer vision syndrome), which is in fact not a specific problem, but rather consists of a wide range of eye pain and fatigue. Research has shown that between 50 and 90 percent of those whose jobs require the use of a computer suffer from at least one of these problems[1].
This syndrome is not limited to adults who work continuously on the computer, but extends to children who use computers in schools, especially in the absence of optimal lighting[1].
Computer vision syndrome occurs as a result of frequent and prolonged use of computers, in a similar way to what occurs in carpal tunnel syndrome. Repetition of the same movements for a long time causes severe stress in these organs[1].
During working hours, the eyes need to focus on specific points on the screen over and over again, such as movements of the eyeball back and forth while reading, and turning the gaze from the screen to paper, for example, and back to the screen. All these movements require a great effort from the muscles of the eyes, and what worsens the situation is the presence of glare and bright colors coming from the screen, unlike the case for books, for example[1].
These problems are clearer for those who already suffer from eye problems such as nearsightedness, and need to use glasses[1].
Using a computer becomes more difficult with age, as the lenses of the eyes become less able to adapt to the light from screens. By the age of forty, the eye's ability to adapt to seeing close objects decreases, which ophthalmologists call presbyopia[1].
Symptoms of computer vision syndrome:
There is no compelling scientific evidence that the use of computers can harm the eye in the long term. But continuous use for long hours causes eye fatigue and its symptoms are:
1- Blurred vision.
2- Double vision.
3- Eye redness and dryness.
4- Irritation of the eye membranes.
5- Persistent severe headache.
6- Back and neck pain.
These symptoms may lead to decreased productivity at work and may lead to chronic health problems [1].
