What is foam concrete and what are its uses?
Foam concrete is a mixture of cement, sand and some chemicals that are mixed in a special mixer and pumped. This mixture creates air bubbles inside the mixture which helps to increase their size and light weight This mixture is used mostly for roofs because it is lightweight in addition to the possibility of being smooth surface in addition to what leads to these voids in increasing thermal insulation of surfaces. foam concrete is a modern material and is considered a suitable solution better than ordinary concrete. Because of the above characteristics of the disadvantages of the concrete is fragile and weak and therefore need to take great care for the implementation and installation of insulation where the work can lead to some breakage and cracks. The history of foam concrete dates back to the early 1920s and the production of autoclaved aerated concrete, which was used mainly as insulation. A detailed study concerning the composition, physical properties and production of foamed concrete was first carried out in the 1950s and 60s. new admixtures were developed in the late 1970s and early 80s, which led to the commercial use of foamed concrete in construction projects
There are several ways to produce foam concrete, specifically aerobic or gaseous cells
- Use of foam material
- Add air-trapping materials
- Causing chemical reactions generating gases
Assist Lecturer Yessar Ameer Ali
