An important goal of the study of individusl differences in motor learning is predicting future performance of individuals based on their initial abilities :
The people differ in their ability to motor skills is very obvious fact . These differences are distinctly evident in a class where a physicl activity is being taught to beginners . While most beginners classes usually include students with some previous experience in the activity, the diversity of initial ability levels is apparent even if those individuals are not considered in the comparision. Consider for example a beginning golf class. As you observe the members of that class on the first day when they are permitted to hit the ball, you will see various degrees of success and failure. Some students will spend an inordinate amount of time simply trying to make contact with the ball. At the other extreme, there will be those who seen to hit the ball rather consistently. The remaninder of the class is usualy distributed somewhere along the continuum of success between those tow extremes.
Parallel differences can be observed in physical activity classes. Students enter dance , gymnastics, bowling, fencing , soccer, etc, classes with a wide variety of what is referred to in some education literature as entry behaviors. These entry behaviors reflect the very real behavioral phenomenon that individuals differ in their abilities to perform motor skills. These differences will also be seen as the students continue in thes classes , thy will learn in different ways and at different rates. The impact of certain instructional techniques will not always be the same for every student .
