Analysis of asphalt quality and mechanical properties

Today, January 29, 2025, the teaching staff, Professor Benin Muhammad Hilal, Professor Mariam Muhammad Musa, and Professor Sally Silan Hussein, organized an awareness activity entitled “Analysis of Asphalt Quality and Its Mechanical Properties,” in the presence of the students of the third stage of the morning study in the Engineering Department. Building and construction technologies, Faculty of Engineering - Future University.<br />The analysis of asphalt quality and its mechanical properties is crucial in the design and maintenance of roads, as it directly affects the performance and lifespan of road surfaces. Asphalt is a mixture of petroleum derivatives, gravel, and minerals, widely used in road construction. Below is an overview of asphalt quality analysis and its mechanical properties:<br />Asphalt Quality: Asphalt quality refers to the ability of the mixture to withstand various environmental and climatic conditions, such as high and low temperatures, in addition to its resistance to wear, expansion, and contraction caused by vehicle movement. Asphalt is tested to ensure the consistency of its components and material proportions.<br />Mechanical Properties:<br />Compressive Strength: This measures the ability of asphalt to withstand forces from traffic movement without collapsing or cracking.<br />Tensile Strength: This measures the ability of asphalt to resist longitudinal forces, important in areas subject to expansion and contraction.<br />Flexibility: The ability of asphalt to return to its original shape after being subjected to stress. Flexible asphalt reduces the likelihood of cracks caused by temperature changes or traffic movement.<br />Wear Resistance: The ability of asphalt to resist wear caused by vehicle friction and weather conditions.<br />Mechanical Tests for Asphalt: These include several tests such as ductility testing, tensile strength testing, cohesion testing, and temperature-related tests to measure the effect of heat on asphalt. Asphalt’s resistance to shrinkage and expansion is also tested, among other assessments to determine its performance under various conditions.<br />Environmental Effects: Environmental factors, such as humidity and temperature, significantly affect asphalt properties. Additionally, using sustainable materials can improve asphalt characteristics, making it more resilient to environmental changes.<br />Therefore, the analysis of asphalt quality and its mechanical properties is essential to ensure the sustainability of roads and to provide a safe and efficient surface for traffic.
