Building and Construction, Faculty of Engineering - Future University.
Water policy in Iraq is a critical issue, as the country heavily depends on water resources from rivers, particularly the Tigris and Euphrates. Below is an overview of Iraq's water policy:
Water Resources: Iraq relies on transboundary rivers originating from neighboring countries, such as Turkey and Iran, with most of the water coming from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. As a result, Iraq's water policy is significantly influenced by diplomatic relations with these countries, as any changes in water policies in these nations directly affect Iraq.
Water Challenges: Iraq faces several water-related challenges, including water scarcity due to dams built by Turkey and Iran on the rivers, as well as climate change impacting rainfall patterns. There is also the issue of water quality deterioration due to pollution and increased water usage for agriculture and industry.
Resource Management: The Iraqi government aims to improve water management through infrastructure development, such as building dams and upgrading irrigation networks. There is also a focus on improving irrigation techniques to reduce water wastage and projects to desalinate water in some areas.
Regional Cooperation: Cooperation with neighboring countries on water issues is a fundamental aspect of Iraq's water policy. Iraq has attempted to sign agreements with Turkey and Iran to regulate water distribution fairly among the countries. However, political tensions and differences in interests often hinder comprehensive solutions.
Water Security: Given the increasing challenges of water scarcity, water security has become a strategic goal for the country. Iraq seeks to ensure sustainable water supply for agriculture, industry, and the population's needs.
Overall, Iraq's water situation presents significant challenges that require innovative and sustainable solutions to address environmental, political, and economic aspects to ensure future water security.
