Animal Cell: Structure and Function

The cell is the basic unit of living organisms, whether plant or animal. In animal organisms, the cell plays a vital role in all biological processes that ensure the survival of living organisms, such as growth, metabolism, reproduction, and adaptation to the environment.

Animal Cell Structure:
The animal cell consists of several main components, each of which has a specific role in maintaining the cell's work and basic functions. These components include:

Cell Membrane:

It is a thin membrane surrounding the cell, consisting of two layers of fats (lipids) that control the passage of materials into and out of the cell. This membrane is responsible for protecting the cell and regulating chemical reactions within it.

Nucleus:

The nucleus is the control center of the cell. It contains the genetic material (DNA) that determines the genetic characteristics of the cell and regulates its activities. The nucleus controls the cell's growth, division, and reproduction.

Cytoplasm:

It is the gelatinous substance that fills the cell between the cell membrane and the nucleus. The cytoplasm contains many organelles that perform vital functions, and it also provides a suitable environment for many chemical reactions.
Mitochondria:

These are the "power factories" of the cell, as mitochondria produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the main source of energy in the cell. This energy is necessary for cellular processes such as cell division and cell transport.
Endoplasmic Reticulum:

It is a network of membranes that helps in the manufacture and transport of proteins and fats. The endoplasmic reticulum is divided into two types: rough (with ribosomes on its surface) which is involved in the manufacture of proteins, and smooth (without ribosomes) which is involved in the manufacture of fats.
Golgi Apparatus:

The Golgi Apparatus works to process and modify the products that are manufactured in the endoplasmic reticulum. It packages proteins and fats and directs them to the appropriate locations within the cell or to other cells.
Ribosomes:

They are small particles that are either found in the cytoplasm or attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum. They are responsible for making proteins through a process called translation.

Microtubules and microfilaments:

They form the cytoskeleton that provides support for the cell and helps move materials around the cell, in addition to helping the cell divide during division.

Functions of the animal cell:
The animal cell not only performs the functions of building and repairing cells, but also performs many other vital activities:

Metabolism:

Animal cells carry out biochemical reactions to convert food into energy. This includes breaking down sugars, fats, and proteins in a process called cellular respiration, which produces energy.
Reproduction and cell division:

Animal cells reproduce by cell division. In this process, the parent cell divides into two cells in a pattern known as mitosis, where the nucleus and other contents of the cell divide to form two new cells.
Cell transport:

Animal cells transport necessary materials across the cell membrane using processes such as diffusion and active transport.
Response to stimuli:

Animal cells are able to respond to changes in the external environment, such as heat or light, thanks to receptors on the cell membrane.
Importance of animal cells in living organisms:
Animal cells are the foundation on which animal life depends. Tissues, organs, and systems in the body are all made up of animal cells. Through the coordinated interaction of these cells, living organisms are able to perform complex vital functions such as movement, reproduction, and maintaining internal balance.

AL_mustaqbal University is the first university in Iraq
