Towards a Green Language: The Role of the Arabic Language in Spreading a Culture of Sustainability
Assistant Professor:Ahmed Mohammed Jawad
College of Administrative Sciences
Abstract
This article examines the role of the Arabic language in promoting concepts of environmental and social sustainability. It reviews the relationship between language and environmental awareness and analyzes the linguistic and cultural potential of Arabic to spread a culture of sustainability. It also highlights the importance of employing language in education, media, and literature, and calls for the development of an Arabic linguistic discourse that reflects environmental values and promotes sustainable practices at the individual and societal levels.
Introduction
Sustainability issues represent a global challenge that requires multidimensional approaches encompassing economic, political, and cultural structures. From this perspective, language emerges as a pivotal tool in spreading awareness and promoting sustainable behaviors. Language is not limited to being a means of expression; it is also a carrier of culture, a framework for thought, and a tool for meaning-making. In the Arab context, the Arabic language possesses a cultural and value-based asset that can be leveraged to shape a responsible environmental discourse that contributes to achieving sustainable development goals.
Language and Sustainability: Theoretical Dimensions
Many researchers point to the close relationship between language and the environment within what is known as "Ecological Linguistics," a field that examines how language is used to express environmental issues and promote sustainable practices. In this context, language becomes a means of conceptual framing that contributes to shaping collective environmental awareness. Hence, developing an environmental linguistic discourse in Arabic contributes to bringing sustainability concepts into the Arabic discourse.
Arabic Language and Environmental Heritage
The Arabic language contains a linguistic and literary wealth that documents the historical relationship between humans and the environment. In ancient Arabic poetry, we find precise descriptions of nature and an implicit call to contemplate and preserve it. Concepts similar to sustainability also appear in religious and ethical heritage, such as:
Non-wastefulness: "And do not be excessive. Indeed, He does not like the wasteful." (Al-An'am: 141)

Reconstruction: (It is He who created you from the earth and settled you therein) [Hud: 61].

Balance: (And He has set the balance, so that you do not transgress within the balance) [Ar-Rahman: 7-8].
These values embedded in the Arab and Islamic heritage represent an ethical foundation that can be repurposed in contemporary environmental discourse.
Towards a Sustainable Arab Environmental Discourse
The Arab discourse on environmental issues must be reconstructed through several approaches, most notably:
1. Education: Incorporating sustainability concepts into Arabic language curricula through reading texts, written expression, and research projects.
2. Media: Developing environmental media content in clear, effective Arabic that is consistent with the local culture.
3. Literature: Encouraging writers and authors to produce Arabic literary texts (poetry, stories, and novels) that address environmental topics and raise ethical and social questions.
4. Environmental Terminology: The need to accurately Arabize modern environmental terminology and circulate it in the media, curricula, and society.
The Role of Educational and Cultural Institutions
Educational and cultural institutions play a fundamental role in establishing green language through:
Training teachers to use environmental content in Arabic.
Supporting research initiatives in the field of language and sustainability.
Launching environmental awareness campaigns targeting youth in their mother tongue.

Conclusion The Arabic language is a fundamental pillar in the process of spreading a culture of sustainability within Arab societies. It not only conveys knowledge, but also instills values and guides behavior. By activating the role of Arabic in education, media, and literature, an environmental linguistic discourse can be built that enhances environmental awareness and contributes to building a culturally and environmentally sustainable future.
Al-Mustaqbal University is the premier university in Iraq.
