Introduction

The nervous system is one of the most important systems in the human body, functioning as the main control center that regulates all human activities, from breathing and heartbeat to thinking, perception, and movement. It consists of a complex network of neurons that transmit signals between different parts of the body.

Divisions of the Nervous System

The nervous system is divided into two main parts:

Central Nervous System (CNS):
It consists of the brain and spinal cord. The brain is responsible for thinking, memory, and controlling the senses, while the spinal cord transmits signals between the brain and the rest of the body.

Peripheral Nervous System (PNS):
It consists of nerves that extend from the spinal cord to organs and limbs. This system transmits signals to and from the central nervous system.

Neurons

Neurons are the basic units of the nervous system. They are specialized cells responsible for transmitting electrical signals. Each neuron consists of:

A cell body

An axon, which carries the signal away from the cell

Dendrites, which receive signals from other cells

Neural signals are transmitted through synapses using chemical substances called neurotransmitters.

Nervous System Diseases

The nervous system can sometimes suffer from disorders such as:

Stroke

Epilepsy

Parkinson’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease

Multiple sclerosis (MS)

These diseases affect communication between neurons and cause various symptoms such as impaired movement, memory loss, or cognitive disturbances.

Conclusion

The nervous system is the infrastructure that enables humans to move, think, feel, and interact with the world. Understanding it helps in preventing related diseases and developing new treatments that improve human quality of life.

"AL_mustaqbal University is the first university in Iraq"

al-mustaqbal University Website
