Introduction

Humans have long sought to use cosmetics to enhance their appearance and boost self-confidence. In the early 20th century, with the discovery of radioactive elements such as radium and uranium, some cosmetics and skincare products began incorporating these materials. At the time, the harmful effects of radiation were not fully understood, leading to widespread use before the risks were recognized.

Use of Radioactive Materials in Makeup

During the early 20th century, substances like radium were added to face powders, creams, and lipsticks, with claims that they would enhance skin radiance and promote a healthy appearance. Radioactive products were even marketed as treatments for wrinkles and signs of aging.

Effects of Radiation on the Body

Radiation emitted by these materials can penetrate the skin and damage cells and tissues. Over time, frequent exposure to radioactive cosmetic products can lead to:
• Skin irritation and redness.
• Accelerated skin aging.
• DNA damage, increasing the risk of cancer.
• Broader health issues such as anemia and bone diseases with high exposure levels.

Laws and Regulations

As understanding of radiation hazards improved in the 1930s and 1940s, governments began establishing laws prohibiting the use of radioactive materials in consumer products, especially cosmetics. Today, cosmetic ingredients are strictly regulated by health authorities such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Current Situation

Currently, cosmetics must be free from harmful radioactive substances. Regular testing ensures the safety of products before they reach consumers. However, caution is advised when purchasing uncertified or counterfeit cosmetics, as they may contain dangerous ingredients.

Conclusion

The historical use of radioactive materials in cosmetics highlights the importance of scientific research and strict regulatory oversight to ensure consumer safety.

"AL_mustaqbal University is the first university in Iraq"

al-mustaqbal University Website
