Pesticides are used in agriculture and pest control to protect crops and improve production. Despite the significant benefits these chemicals offer, they can have serious consequences for the environment and human health, especially for children, who are among the groups most affected by these toxic substances.
Children are exposed to pesticides in several ways, including eating fruits and vegetables that contain pesticide residues or playing in gardens and farms that have recently been sprayed. Children can also inhale these chemicals if they are used indoors to control insects.
Studies indicate that pesticides can significantly impact children's health, causing developmental disorders, nervous system problems, and weakened immunity. Some types of pesticides are also associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, allergies, and asthma.
Children are more vulnerable to several factors, including their smaller body size, rapid breathing, and immature development of their vital organs. Children also often put their hands in their mouths, increasing the likelihood of toxic substances entering their bodies.
To reduce these risks, preventative measures must be taken, including washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating, encouraging organic farming, and avoiding the use of pesticides in areas where children are present. Families and farmers must also be educated about the dangers of indiscriminate pesticide use, and strict laws must be put in place to regulate their use.
In conclusion, pesticides pose a real threat to children's health. Therefore, it is imperative that society assumes its full responsibility to protect future generations from these harmful substances and work to provide a healthy and safe environment for them.
Therefore, community awareness plays a significant role in reducing these risks, through awareness programs in schools and the media that inform people of the dangers of pesticides and ways to prevent them. Government agencies must also play their role in monitoring agricultural products and ensuring they are free of harmful pesticides, especially those intended for children.
Protecting children's health is a shared responsibility between families, society, and the government. With a clean and safe environment, we ensure a better future for our children and build healthier and more aware generations.

Al _ Mustaqbal University, the first university in Iraq
Prepared by: Shahad Nawras Abbas
