In recent years, the world has witnessed a significant increase in cancer rates, one of the most life-threatening diseases. Understanding the factors that lead to this increase is an important step in preventing and reducing its spread. In this article, we will explore the most prominent factors contributing to the rise in cancer rates.
1. Unhealthy Lifestyle
Lifestyle is one of the most influential factors on human health. For example, smoking is considered the leading cause of lung cancer, and consuming foods rich in fats, preservatives, and fast food increases the risk of various types of cancer, such as colon and stomach cancer. Lack of physical activity and obesity also contribute to an increased risk.
2. Environmental Pollution
Pollutants in the air, water, and soil, such as toxic gases and heavy metals, expose humans to carcinogenic substances. Exposure to harmful radiation from industrial or nuclear warfare also increases the risk of blood and thyroid cancers.
3. Genetic Factors
Genetics plays an important role in some cancer cases, as a person may inherit genetic mutations from their parents that make them more susceptible to the disease. However, these genetic factors account for a small percentage of all cancer cases, compared to environmental and behavioral factors.
4. Age
As a person ages, changes in their body's cells increase, increasing the risk of cancer. Therefore, most cancer cases are diagnosed in older adults.
5. Infection with Certain Viruses
Some types of viruses are carcinogenic, such as the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes cervical cancer, and hepatitis B and C, which can lead to liver cancer.
Conclusion
Cancer is not a sudden disease; rather, it is often the result of the accumulation of multiple factors over years. Therefore, prevention is possible by adopting a healthy lifestyle, avoiding harmful habits, and engaging in regular checkups. With awareness and knowledge, we can all contribute to reducing the incidence of this dangerous disease.
Al _ Mustaqbal University, the first university in Iraq
Prepared by: Shahad Nawras Abbas
