In children, the kidneys may become inflamed due to bacterial or viral infections, or as a result of autoimmune diseases. Kidney inflammation in children requires prompt diagnosis and treatment to avoid potential complications.

First: What is Kidney Inflammation?
Kidney inflammation refers to a condition where the kidney tissue becomes inflamed, affecting its ability to perform its normal functions. It may appear in two main forms:
• Acute inflammation: Occurs suddenly and is often caused by infection.
• Chronic inflammation: Develops gradually and may lead to permanent damage if left untreated.

Second: Key Symptoms of Kidney Inflammation in Children
1. Fever
Kidney inflammation is usually accompanied by a high and persistent fever.
2. Flank or Lower Back Pain
The child may experience pain on one side of the body or in the lower back. This pain may be severe or intermittent.
3. Nausea or Vomiting
Due to the accumulation of toxins in the body, the child may feel nauseated or vomit.
4. Fatigue or General Weakness
The child may feel unusually tired, lose appetite, or sleep excessively.
5. Swelling in the Face or Feet
Swelling may occur due to fluid retention as a result of impaired kidney function.
6. High Blood Pressure
In some cases, kidney inflammation may cause elevated blood pressure due to kidney dysfunction.

Third: Prevention and Care
• Ensuring the child drinks an adequate amount of water daily.
• Prompt treatment of bladder or urinary tract infections.
• Balanced nutrition to strengthen immunity:
• Consuming fruits, vegetables, and foods rich in vitamin C and zinc helps reduce the risk of infection.
• Monitoring behavioral changes in the child:
• Such as excessive sleep, loss of appetite, or unusual irritability—these may be early signs of infection.
• Reducing salt and fast food intake:
• To lessen the burden on the kidneys and support long-term kidney health.

Conclusion
Kidney inflammation in children is a treatable condition if diagnosed in time. Parents should closely monitor symptoms and consult a physician promptly if any concerning signs appear. Healthy kidneys are essential for a child’s overall health and proper development.

Al-Mustaqbal University the First University in Iraq
