Global Warming and Its Connection to Fossil Fuel Use
Eng. Nourhan Thamer Assi

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
Global warming and fossil fuel consumption are central to several key SDGs, including:
Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy – reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting renewable alternatives.
Goal 13: Climate Action – addressing the causes and consequences of climate change.
Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – encouraging energy efficiency and sustainable practices.
Goal 15: Life on Land – protecting ecosystems affected by climate shifts.
Global Warming and Its Connection to Fossil Fuel Use

Global warming is one of the most urgent environmental challenges facing humanity today. At the heart of this crisis lies the widespread use of fossil fuels—coal, oil, and natural gas—which are the primary source of greenhouse gas emissions.

When fossil fuels are burned to produce electricity, fuel vehicles, or power factories, they release carbon dioxide (CO₂) and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. These gases trap heat from the sun, preventing it from escaping back into space. This effect is known as the greenhouse effect, and while it is a natural phenomenon necessary for life on Earth, human activities have greatly intensified it.
The more fossil fuels we burn, the more CO₂ accumulates in the atmosphere. This leads to a gradual rise in Earth’s average temperature—what we call global warming. The consequences include:
Melting polar ice and rising sea levels
More frequent and intense heatwaves, storms, and wildfires
Droughts and water scarcity
Disruption of ecosystems and loss of biodiversity
In addition to carbon dioxide, fossil fuel combustion can release methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O)—both far more potent than CO₂ in trapping heat.

To combat global warming, scientists and policymakers emphasize the urgent need to reduce fossil fuel use. This can be achieved by:
Transitioning to renewable energy sources (like wind, solar, and hydro)
Improving energy efficiency
Implementing carbon pricing and regulations
Supporting innovations such as electric vehicles and green hydrogen

Fossil fuels powered industrial growth for over a century, but continuing to rely on them threatens the planet’s future. Tackling global warming requires global cooperation, strong policy, and a clear shift toward cleaner, sustainable energy solutions.

Al-Mustaqbal University – The No. 1 Private University in Iraq
