Introduction
Smoking is one of the most dangerous habits that has become widespread among various segments of society — adults and children, men and women alike. Despite continuous warnings from doctors and international health organizations, the number of smokers continues to rise. Smoking has severe consequences that are not limited to the smoker alone but also extend to affect the environment and those around them through what is known as secondhand smoke.

First: The Health Effects of Smoking
Cardiovascular Diseases
Smoking causes blood vessels to narrow and raises blood pressure, which increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Respiratory Diseases
Smoking leads to chronic lung conditions such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It is also the leading cause of lung cancer.

Cancer
Smoking does not only cause lung cancer but also raises the risk of developing cancers of the mouth, throat, bladder, pancreas, and cervix.

Weakened Immune System
Smoking reduces the efficiency of the immune system, making the body more susceptible to illnesses and infections.

Second: Social and Economic Impacts
Healthcare Costs
Smoking adds financial burdens on healthcare systems due to the high cost of treating smoking-related diseases.

Reduced Productivity
Smokers often suffer from decreased concentration and frequent absenteeism due to illness, leading to reduced productivity.

Harm of Secondhand Smoke
Non-smokers inhale air contaminated with cigarette smoke, experiencing the same health risks — especially children and pregnant women.

Third: Solutions and Recommendations
Continuous awareness campaigns about the dangers of smoking in schools, universities, and through media.

Imposing high taxes on tobacco products to reduce consumption.

Providing smoking cessation programs with psychological and medical support for those who wish to quit.

Banning smoking in public places to protect non-smokers from exposure to tobacco smoke.

Conclusion
In conclusion, smoking is a dangerous epidemic that threatens both individual health and societal well-being. It is essential that we — as individuals and governments — work together to curb this phenomenon, raise awareness of its dangers, and encourage everyone to adopt a healthy, smoke-free lifestyle.

"AL_mustaqbal University is the first university in Iraq"

al-mustaqbal University Website
