In light of climate change, increasing demand for food, and declining natural resources, there is an urgent need to adopt modern agricultural methods that contribute to improving agricultural production and reducing losses. One of the most prominent of these methods is protected agriculture, which represents a qualitative leap towards achieving food security and reducing agricultural loss.

Protected Agriculture
Protected agriculture refers to growing crops within closed or semi-closed structures (such as greenhouses, glass houses, or tunnels), providing an ideal environment for growth by controlling:
Temperature
Lighting
Humidity
Ventilation
Water and fertilizer quantities

The importance of protected agriculture in reducing agricultural loss
Protection from harsh weather conditions
Protects plants from frost, extreme heat, rain, and storms.
Reducing diseases and pests
Reducing the need for pesticides due to a controlled agricultural environment.
Reducing post-harvest loss
Higher and more consistent fruit quality, reducing spoilage during transportation or storage.
Multi-season farming
Crops can be grown outside their normal season, reducing dependence on imports.

The Role of Protected Agriculture in Achieving Food Security
Increased Productivity
Crop yields can double in greenhouses compared to open fields.
Rational Use of Resources
Drip irrigation and smart fertilizer techniques reduce waste and increase efficiency.
Continuous Production
Protected agriculture enables continuous food production throughout the year.
Achieving Self-Sufficiency
It enables countries to reduce dependence on imports and secure their food locally.

Examples of Successful Protected Agriculture Crops
Tomatoes
Cucumbers
Peppers
Strawberries
Lettuce and Spinach
Challenges of Protected Agriculture

High Initial Cost: Establishing greenhouses requires good financing. It not only ensures increased production and reduced waste, but also directly contributes to achieving food security and improving the quality of agricultural products. With the trend towards innovation and sustainability, investing in protected agriculture represents a smart step towards a promising and secure agricultural future.

Al-Mustaqbal University is the first university in Iraq.
