With overcrowding and increasing pollution in cities, indoor air quality has become a matter that directly impacts our mental and physical health. Among the natural and effective solutions for improving the indoor environment, houseplants have emerged as one of the most important and safe ways to purify the air and enhance psychological comfort.

How Plants Purify the Air
Plants photosynthesize, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. More importantly, however, is their ability to absorb organic pollutants such as:
Formaldehyde (from furniture, carpets, and cleaning products)
Benzene (from paints and vehicles)
Toluene and xylene
In addition, some plants release moisture into the air, which helps humidify dry indoor conditions.

Benefits of Indoor Plants on Air Quality and Human Health

1. Reducing Air Pollutants

NASA studies have shown that some plants can reduce pollutants by up to 87% within 24 hours.

2. Increasing the oxygen content in the air

Which enhances concentration, reduces mental fatigue, and headaches.

3. Improving humidity

Which reduces dry eyes and skin and improves breathing.

4. Absorbing carbon dioxide

Especially in indoor spaces with poor ventilation.

5. Reducing stress and improving mood

Having a plant indoors has a relaxing psychological effect.

Best indoor plants for purifying the air

Plant, pollutants it absorbs, additional features

Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily) Formaldehyde, benzene, flowering and beautiful
Sansevieria (Mother-in-law's tongue) Carbon dioxide, formaldehyde, low maintenance
Aglaonema Organic pollutants, ideal for offices
Bamboo (Bamboo) Formaldehyde, adds beauty and elegance
Potthus (Benzene, xylene) Fast-growing and easy to care for

Tips for caring for indoor plants

Place them in well-lit areas but away from direct sunlight.
Water the plant regularly without overwatering the soil.
Gently clean the plant leaves to remove dust.
Ensure the pot has good drainage.

We can't always control the air quality outside our homes, but we can improve the environment inside our homes in simple, natural ways. Growing indoor plants is not just a decorative addition; it's an effective way to purify the air and improve the quality of daily life. With a little care and the right plant selection, any indoor space can be transformed into a healthy and clean oasis.

Al-Mustaqbal University is the first university in Iraq.
