Plants in their natural and agricultural environments face numerous threats, such as harmful insects, fungi, and viruses, leading to reduced agricultural production and deteriorating crop quality. Traditionally, chemical pesticides have been widely used, but they have raised environmental and health concerns. In contrast, biological methods have emerged as a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for plant protection.

Biological Methods for Plant Protection
Biological methods involve the use of beneficial organisms, such as predatory insects, bacteria, or fungi, to control agricultural pests and pathogens, instead of using chemicals. These methods are also known as "biological control."

Types of Biological Methods in Plant Protection:

1. Using Natural Enemies of Pests:
Organisms that feed on harmful insects or pests are introduced.
For example, using ladybirds to control aphids, or using parasitic wasps to eliminate insect larvae.

2. Using Beneficial Microorganisms:
Some bacteria and fungi attack plant pathogens or strengthen plant resistance.
Example: Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) bacteria, which kills harmful caterpillars without harming the plant or humans.

3. Growing Disease-Resistant Plants:
Using hybridization or genetic modification techniques, plants are produced that are resistant to diseases or pests.
Example: Fungus-resistant tomatoes or insect-resistant corn.

4. Releasing Sterile Insects:
Male pest insects are raised, sterilized, and then released into the fields. They mate with female insects without producing offspring, reducing their populations.

5. Using Natural Plant Extracts:
Some plants contain substances that repel insects, and these can be extracted and used as alternatives to pesticides.
Example: Neem oil or garlic extract.

Advantages of Biological Methods:
Does not pollute soil or water.
Safe for human and animal health.
Maintains ecological balance.
Reduces pest resistance to treatments.

Al-Mustaqbal University is the first university in Iraq.
