Coronaviruses, scientifically known as "coronaviruses," are a large family of viruses that can cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to severe and potentially fatal respiratory diseases. These viruses gained global notoriety after the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in late 2019.
They are called "crown" because of their appearance under a microscope, which resembles a crown of suns due to the protrusions that cover their surface.

Known Types of Coronaviruses
Common human viruses: These typically cause mild colds.
SARS-CoV: Emerged in China in 2002 and led to a severe illness known as severe acute respiratory syndrome (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome).
MERS-CoV: Discovered in Saudi Arabia in 2012, it causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).
SARS-CoV-2: Responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Coronavirus Transmission Methods
Respiratory droplets: through coughing or sneezing.
Touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the face (eyes, nose, mouth).
In some cases, the surrounding air if the virus is carried in very fine particles.

Symptoms of Infection
Symptoms vary depending on the type of virus and the severity of the condition, but they typically include:
Fever.
Dry cough.
Shortness of breath.
General fatigue.
Loss of smell and taste (especially in cases of COVID-19).
In severe cases: pneumonia, respiratory failure, or heart and kidney complications.

Coronavirus Diagnosis
PCR testing: The most accurate way to detect the presence of the virus.
Rapid tests: To detect the presence of antigens or antibodies.
CT scans: Used to assess lung condition in advanced cases.

Coronavirus Treatment
There is no specific treatment for most coronaviruses yet, but treatment relies on:
Supportive care: such as rest, fluids, and fever reducers.
Isolation to prevent infection to others.
Some medications have shown partial effectiveness in reducing the severity of symptoms (such as remdesivir and cortisone in certain cases).
Vaccines: Several effective vaccines have been developed against the novel coronavirus, such as Pfizer, Moderna, and AstraZeneca.

Coronavirus Prevention
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water.
Wear a mask in public.
Avoid gatherings and crowded places.
Ventilate enclosed spaces.
Receive a vaccine approved by health authorities.
Maintain a healthy lifestyle to strengthen immunity.

Al-Mustaqbal University is the first university in Iraq.
