Typhoid is an acute bacterial infection of the gastrointestinal tract caused by a type of bacteria known as Salmonella Typhi. Typhoid is transmitted through ingestion of contaminated food or water and is common in areas with poor sanitation and poor hygiene. Without treatment, typhoid can be a serious illness, but it is treatable and easy to treat if diagnosed early.

Causes of Typhoid
Salmonella Typhi is transmitted to humans through:
Drinking water contaminated with the feces of an infected person.
Eating contaminated food that has not been thoroughly cooked or prepared under unsanitary conditions.
Contacting contaminated hands and then touching the mouth or food.

Symptoms of Typhoid
Symptoms usually begin 7 to 14 days after infection and appear gradually. They include:
A gradual rise in temperature (may reach 40°C).
Persistent headache.
Abdominal pain.
Constipation or diarrhea (especially in children).
Loss of appetite and weight loss.
Pink spotty rash on the chest or abdomen.
General weakness and extreme fatigue.
In severe cases: intestinal bleeding or perforation, which are serious complications.

Diagnosis of Typhoid
Diagnosis of typhoid depends on:
A clinical examination of symptoms and signs.
Blood tests: to detect the presence of typhoid bacteria.
Stool or urine tests.
In some cases, a bone marrow culture is performed to obtain an accurate diagnosis.

Treatment of Typhoid
Treatment includes:
Antibiotics: such as ceftriaxone, azithromycin, or ciprofloxacin (depending on the patient's condition and bacterial resistance).
Severe rest and plenty of fluids.
Proper nutrition: to help the body fight the disease.
In advanced or severe cases, the patient may require hospitalization.

Prevention of Typhoid
Wash hands thoroughly before eating and after using the bathroom.
Drink clean, sterilized water (boiled or filtered).
Eat well-cooked food and avoid exposed foods.
Avoid eating unwashed fruits and vegetables.
Typhoid vaccination is available and effective, especially for travelers to endemic areas.

Al-Mustaqbal University is the first university in Iraq.
