Scented products are among the most widespread consumer goods in our daily lives. They are found in a variety of applications such as perfumes, deodorants, shampoos, household cleaners, and even some food items. While their primary purpose is to provide a pleasant fragrance or mask unwanted odors, these products often contain chemical compounds that may have negative effects on both human health and the environment.

First: Effects on Human Health

Most scented products contain chemicals such as phthalates, formaldehyde, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These substances may cause:
• Irritation of the respiratory system and allergic reactions, especially in individuals with asthma.
• Headaches and dizziness from repeated inhalation.
• Hormonal disruption due to prolonged exposure to phthalates, which some studies link to reproductive issues.
• Skin irritation when certain chemical components come into direct contact with the skin.

Second: Environmental Effects

When these products are used, volatile chemicals are released into indoor and outdoor air, contributing to air pollution. The disposal of scented cleaning products through wastewater also leads to river and soil contamination, affecting microorganisms essential for ecological balance. In some cases, these substances may enter the food chain through plants or fish.

Third: Possible Alternatives

To minimize these effects, safer options can be adopted, such as:
• Using natural essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances.
• Choosing products labeled “fragrance-free” or “eco-friendly.”
• Ventilating homes naturally rather than relying excessively on chemical air fresheners.

Conclusion

Awareness of the risks associated with scented products does not necessarily mean eliminating them altogether, but rather calls for mindful use and the adoption of safer alternatives whenever possible. Protecting our health and the environment we live in is a shared responsibility that begins with the simplest consumer choices.

"AL_mustaqbal University is the first university in Iraq"

al-mustaqbal University Website
