Health education is one of the most important effective tools in building a society aware of the risks of disease and ways to prevent them. It is the cornerstone of achieving comprehensive and sustainable healthcare. In light of the increasing health challenges facing the world, both in terms of the spread of infectious and chronic diseases, there is an urgent need to raise health awareness among community members and promote preventive behaviors as a primary and essential line of defense.

Preventive behaviors represent a set of daily actions that, if adhered to by individuals, help reduce the chances of contracting disease and limit its spread. The most prominent of these behaviors include: regular handwashing, maintaining personal and public hygiene, using personal protective equipment such as sanitizers and masks when needed, adhering to a healthy diet, engaging in physical activity, avoiding smoking, undergoing regular checkups, and ensuring vaccinations are administered on time.

Health education cannot fulfill its intended role unless it is supported by effective institutions that disseminate it using simplified scientific methods that suit all segments of society. Here, the role of schools, universities, the media, and health centers in disseminating health knowledge is highlighted, whether through awareness programs, field campaigns, or visual and electronic materials. Involving students and academic staff, particularly in scientific departments such as the Life Sciences Department, contributes to building an informed generation capable of conveying this message to the surrounding community.

Many experiences have proven that prevention is better than cure, not only from a health perspective, but also in terms of economic costs and the pressures placed on the health system. Therefore, investing in health education is a long-term investment in a healthier and more stable future.

A health-conscious society is better able to respond to health crises and mitigate their consequences, and more prepared to adopt healthy lifestyles that ensure sustainable public health. Hence, health education becomes not just an awareness-raising activity, but a shared responsibility that requires the combined efforts of everyone, individuals and institutions, to build a balanced and safe health environment.
Al-Mustaqbal University is the first university in Iraq.

Goal 3 - Good health and well-being
