Natural ecosystems are an essential component of life on planet Earth. They represent a complex network of living organisms (plants, animals, microorganisms) that interact with each other and with non-living elements such as water, air, soil, and light. These systems provide vital services to humans and other organisms, including air and water purification, food production, climate regulation, and biodiversity conservation.

However, in light of accelerating human activity and increasing environmental pressures, the sustainability of ecosystems has become an urgent necessity to ensure the continuity of these services and their role in supporting life on Earth.

Types of Natural Ecosystems:

Terrestrial ecosystems: such as forests, deserts, savannas, and mountains.

Aquatic ecosystems: including freshwater (rivers and lakes) and marine environments (oceans and coral reefs).

Wetlands: such as swamps and marshes, which are among the richest habitats in terms of biodiversity.

Importance of Ecosystems:

Climate regulation and carbon dioxide absorption.

Protecting soil from erosion.

Groundwater replenishment.

Supporting biodiversity.

Providing natural sources of food, medicine, and raw materials.

Providing cultural, recreational, and spiritual services to humans.

Threats to the sustainability of ecosystems:

Climate change: disrupts ecosystem balance and increases natural disasters.

Deforestation and urban expansion: cause loss of natural habitats for living organisms.

Environmental pollution: affects water, air, and soil quality.

Overfishing and loss of biodiversity.

Unsustainable agriculture and overgrazing.

Methods for achieving ecosystem sustainability:

Protecting and expanding natural areas and environmental reserves.

Rehabilitating degraded habitats and planting native species.

Responsibly using natural resources, especially water and forests.

Transitioning to renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions.

Raising environmental awareness and promoting environmental education in schools and communities.

Promoting sustainable agriculture and environmentally friendly practices.

The sustainability of natural ecosystems is key to achieving a balance between development and the environment, and ensuring a safe and healthy future for future generations. Preserving these systems is not an environmental luxury, but an existential necessity that requires global cooperation and responsible local practices that respect the rights of both nature and humanity.

Al-Mustaqbal University is the first university in Iraq.

Goal 11 - Sustainable cities and communities
