On Monday, October 20, 2025, the College of Medicine, in cooperation with the College of Nursing at Al-Mustaqbal University, organized a scientific workshop titled “Hereditary Anemia”, delivered by Dr. Widad Hamza Shakir from the College of Medicine and Dr. Iftikhar Hamza Shakir from the College of Nursing, with the attendance of a number of professors and students from both colleges.
The workshop began with Dr. Widad Hamza Shakir, who discussed the genetic foundations of anemia, explaining that the disease results from a genetic defect that leads to reduced hemoglobin production in red blood cells. This causes symptoms such as chronic fatigue, paleness, and rapid heartbeat. She also highlighted the importance of early genetic testing and its role in identifying carriers of the disease-causing gene before marriage or childbirth, as an effective preventive measure to limit its transmission to future generations.
On her part, Dr. Iftikhar Hamza Shakir addressed the nursing and care aspects for patients with hereditary anemia, emphasizing the importance of regular follow-up and implementing comprehensive nursing care plans that consider the physical, psychological, and social needs of patients. She also stressed the necessity of educating families about proper nutrition, regular medical monitoring, and managing pain episodes, particularly in cases of sickle cell anemia.
This workshop is part of a series of scientific activities organized by Al-Mustaqbal University to support the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), Goal 4 (Quality Education), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), through raising health awareness, enhancing collaboration between medical and nursing colleges, and promoting scientific research that contributes to the prevention of hereditary diseases and improvement of healthcare quality.
At the conclusion of the workshop, a discussion session was held between the students and the lecturers to answer inquiries, during which real-life experiences and clinical cases were presented to reinforce scientific concepts for participants. The event highlighted the importance of continuing such activities to serve the community and enhance both the scientific and humanitarian standards at the university.
