“The College of Health and Medical Technologies Organizes an Awareness Symposium on Drugs and Psychoactive Substances as Part of Efforts to Promote Sustainable Development.”

Under the guidance of the Dean of the College of Health and Medical Technologies, Asst. Prof. Dr. Zahraa Haleem Al-Qayem, and in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the College organized an awareness symposium under the slogan “A Drug-Free Iraq”, in coordination with the Directorate of Drug and Psychoactive Substances Control, aiming to raise health and social awareness among university students and the wider community. The symposium was attended by Dean Haider Hassoun Al-Saadi, Director of Drug and Psychoactive Substances Control, and Mr. Salam, the legal advisor at the directorate, while the session was moderated by Dr. Nu’man Al-Khazraji. The symposium opened with a welcoming speech by Dr. Muzafar Al-Zuhairi, Director of Scientific and Academic Supervision at the University, who emphasized the importance of continuous education for youth regarding the risks of drugs and their health, social, and security impacts. Dean Haider Hassoun Al-Saadi addressed national efforts to combat drug abuse, presenting the latest statistics and preventive measures, and called for integrated roles among security, academic, and community institutions to curb the spread of this menace. Mr. Salam discussed the legal aspects related to drug use, promotion, and associated penalties, highlighting individuals’ responsibilities to protect themselves and their families. The symposium witnessed active participation from students, who posed questions and contributed to the discussion, reflecting their commitment to ongoing awareness and education. At the conclusion of the event, the College’s Associate Dean for Scientific Affairs, Dr. Ahmed Adnan Al-Khafaji, presented certificates of appreciation to the speakers in recognition of their scientific contributions, reaffirming the College’s continued commitment to organizing awareness initiatives that support the Sustainable Development Goals, including: Goal 3 – Good Health and Well-Being: by reducing the health and social risks of drug abuse. Goal 4 – Quality Education: by disseminating knowledge and scientific awareness among students and the community.
