Dignity is a feeling of self-esteem and self-respect and is a basic value of nursing practice. The nurse and midwife aims to promote, protect and advocate the dignity of those patients or clients who are vulnerable and incapable of protecting their own interests. The nurse and midwife respects the patient or client as an individual.

 Nurse and midwife must recognize and respect the role of patients and clients as partners in their care and the contribution they can make to it.
This involves identifying their preferences regarding care and respecting these within the limits of professional practice, existing legislation, resources and the goals of a therapeutic relationship.

 Nurse and midwife must deliver nursing or midwifery care without prejudicial behavior.
The professions are morally obliged to respect human existence and the individuality of all persons who are recipients of nursing care. Factors such as gender, age, ethnicity, personality and religious beliefs should be respected by the nurse, and care should be tailored in such a manner that personal needs as well as cultural values are maintained

 Nurse and midwife at all times maintain appropriate professional boundaries in the relationships the nurses have with patients and clients.
The nurse and midwife must ensure that all aspects of the relationship focus exclusively on the health care needs of the patient or client

 Nurse and midwife direct care towards the prevention and relief of suffering at all times.
Care is tailored for the individual patient or client with the intention of strengthening his / her own capacity for care and recovery, thus achieving the highest degree of wellbeing. The professionals comfort and care for people of all ages. When life can no longer be sustained the nurse and midwife supports a dignified and peaceful death

Prepared by-
Professor.
