The Negative Impact of Electronic Cigarettes (Vaping) on the Mental State of University Students Introduction Electronic cigarette use (vaping) has spread widely among university students in recent years, due to the mistaken belief that it is a safe alternative to traditional smoking or a way to relieve stress and academic pressure. However, recent scientific studies have shown that vaping has clear negative effects on students’ mental state and psychological health, which in turn negatively affect their academic performance and mental stability. Concept of Electronic Cigarettes An electronic cigarette is a device that heats a liquid, often containing nicotine, chemicals, and flavorings, converting it into vapor that is inhaled. Although combustion does not occur, these liquids contain compounds that affect the central nervous system. Negative Effects on Mental State 1. Anxiety and Stress Nicotine in vaping disrupts brain chemistry, causing a temporary feeling of relaxation followed by increased levels of anxiety and stress. Students who use e-cigarettes experience frequent mood swings, especially during periods of cessation. 2. Impaired Concentration and Attention Studies indicate that regular use of electronic cigarettes negatively affects cognitive abilities, particularly concentration and attention, which are essential for university students’ success. Nicotine dependence also leads to mental distraction and reduced capacity to absorb information during lectures or study sessions. 3. Depression and Mood Disorders Vaping is associated with a higher risk of depression, especially among young people. Nicotine affects the release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin, disrupting psychological balance and increasing feelings of sadness and isolation. 4. Psychological Dependence and Addiction E-cigarettes can cause strong psychological dependence, making students unable to perform daily or academic activities without them. This dependence leads to feelings of frustration and irritability when the device is unavailable, negatively affecting mental stability. Impact on Academic Performance The negative mental effects of vaping are reflected in students’ academic performance, as evidenced by lower academic achievement, weak classroom participation, increased absenteeism, and reduced motivation to learn. Conclusion Despite the widespread use of electronic cigarettes among university students, their negative effects on mental state and psychological health cannot be ignored. Raising awareness of vaping risks, implementing educational programs within universities, and encouraging students to adopt healthy lifestyles are essential steps to limit this phenomenon and protect students’ mental well-being.
