The Biomedical Engineering Department organized a unique scientific and awareness-raising workshop for first-year students, presented by Dr. Alaa Mohammed Hussein Wais. This workshop was part of the department's efforts to instill the concepts of sustainable development and raise awareness of its importance among students at an early stage of their studies.
The workshop aimed to introduce students to the concept of sustainable development and its various dimensions, highlighting the role of the individual, particularly young people, in supporting development paths and achieving a balance between environmental, social, and economic aspects. It also emphasized the importance of applying these concepts in daily life, as well as in future academic and professional fields.
During the workshop, Dr. Wais discussed the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations. Each goal was reviewed individually, explaining its direct impact on society and the environment, and its role in building a more just and sustainable future. The workshop also highlighted the relationship between the field of biomedical engineering and these goals, particularly those related to good health, quality education, equality, and innovation.
The workshop witnessed remarkable student engagement, as the program included interactive activities and group discussions that encouraged students to share their opinions, ideas, and experiences, thus enhancing their practical understanding of sustainability concepts. A series of informative videos addressing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a simple and engaging manner were also presented, effectively conveying the concepts clearly and attractively.
At the workshop's conclusion, participating students expressed their deep appreciation for its content and importance, emphasizing the need to integrate SDG concepts and goals into school curricula and to strengthen the role of students and youth in supporting initiatives that contribute to achieving sustainable development and building a conscious and responsible society.
