The Department of biology organized a scientific workshop entitled “Goiter in Animals and Humans”, delivered by Professor Dr. Khairy Abdullah Dawood, as part of its scientific activities aimed at enhancing medical and biological knowledge and linking theoretical concepts with practical applications.
The workshop was attended by the Head of the Department of Life Sciences, Professor Dr. Ali Shaala Muailif, the Department Coordinator, Lecturer Assistant Jaafar Hamid Jaafar, in addition to the Activity Coordinators: Lecturer Assistant Zainab Nazim Aziz, Lecturer Assistant Baneen Maen Kareem, and Lecturer Assistant Duha Salah Sahib, along with a number of faculty members and students.
The workshop addressed the definition of goiter and its causes, highlighting its physiological mechanisms and health effects in both humans and animals. It also discussed the role of iodine deficiency, environmental and nutritional factors in its occurrence, in addition to methods of diagnosis, prevention, and treatment, and the importance of health awareness in reducing its prevalence.
The workshop emphasized the importance of integration between life sciences, medical sciences, and veterinary sciences in understanding diseases shared between humans and animals, as well as the role of scientific research in developing preventive strategies and improving public health.
This workshop comes within the Department of biology efforts to support scientific activities, develop students’ skills, and strengthen the university’s role in spreading health and scientific awareness and serving the community.
