In recent years, technology has become an integral part of our daily lives. Smartphones, social media platforms, online work, and electronic games have greatly simplified many aspects of life; however, at the same time, they have left profound effects on our mental health that may not always be easily noticed. 1. Digital Addiction and Loss of Concentration Excessive use of smartphones and social media can lead to a form of digital addiction, where individuals feel a constant need to check notifications and messages. This behavior reduces the ability to concentrate and increases mental distraction, negatively affecting productivity and overall quality of life. 2. Anxiety and Social Comparison Social media often encourages people to compare their lives with the idealized images of others. Such comparisons can generate feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction, increasing levels of anxiety and depression, particularly among young people. 3. Social Isolation Despite Connectivity Although technology allows communication with people from all over the world, it may reduce real face-to-face interaction. This lack of direct social relationships can lead to feelings of loneliness and psychological isolation. 4. Sleep Disorders The blue light emitted from screens affects the secretion of melatonin, the hormone responsible for regulating sleep. This can result in insomnia and sleep disturbances, which in turn negatively impact mood and concentration the following day. 5. Impact on Self-Esteem The constant pursuit of likes and comments may cause an individual’s self-esteem to become dependent on others’ opinions. This dependency can lead to continuous emotional fluctuations between satisfaction and frustration. How Can We Use Technology in a Healthy Way? Setting a daily time limit for phone usage. Turning off unnecessary notifications. Taking regular breaks from screens. Engaging in outdoor activities and real-life hobbies. Allocating time for direct, face-to-face interaction with family and friends. Conclusion Technology is a double-edged sword. While it is a powerful tool for development and communication, it can become a source of psychological stress if misused. Awareness of how to interact with technology in a balanced way is the first step toward achieving better mental well-being and a more stable, healthy life
