Mental health has long been marginalized compared to somatic medicine, despite the World Health Organization’s confirmation that mental disorders such as depression and anxiety impose a substantial economic and social burden on individuals and societies. In recent years, artificial intelligence technologies have begun to bridge this gap by enabling the development of Digital Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Digital CBT) and applications capable of tracking mood and analyzing emotions in real time. Digital Behavioral Therapy Digital behavioral therapy relies on virtual platforms that deliver interactive therapeutic sessions managed by artificial intelligence systems trained on established behavioral and cognitive therapy protocols. This model allows patients to access mental health services anytime and from anywhere, which is particularly critical in societies facing shortages of specialized mental health professionals, such as Iraq. Sentiment Analysis and Artificial Intelligence Techniques In parallel, sentiment analysis technologies enable continuous monitoring of changes in mood and behavior through interaction with written text or vocal tone. The resulting data provide clinicians and therapists with a comprehensive and accurate understanding of a patient’s psychological state, thereby enhancing opportunities for early intervention before symptoms escalate into severe mental health disorders. Ethical Challenges Ethical concerns remain a central issue, as the collection of sensitive psychological data raises important questions regarding privacy and digital security. Consequently, the successful implementation of these applications depends on the establishment of clear regulatory frameworks and strict policies that ensure data protection and strengthen users’ trust in these technologies. Conclusion and Sustainable Development Goals Artificial intelligence does not replace the role of the mental health professional; rather, it enhances clinical effectiveness and expands the reach of psychological services to broader segments of the population. Given the increasing prevalence of mental health disorders following wars and economic crises in Iraq, the adoption of digital therapy and sentiment analysis may represent a transformative step toward improving community mental health. This approach can be directly linked to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It supports Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by providing innovative solutions for the treatment of mental disorders and improving quality of life. It also contributes to Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) through fostering innovation in digital health and developing advanced technological infrastructures capable of delivering remote mental health care. Furthermore, it advances Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by making digital mental health services accessible to a wide range of populations, including those living in remote areas or facing limited access to traditional healthcare services. By embracing such advanced digital health solutions, the University of Al-Mustaqbal, the leading university in Iraq, continues to affirm its pioneering role in supporting innovation, research, and sustainable development, while contributing to the advancement of mental health care and societal well-being in Iraq and the region. Al-Mustaqbal University is the first one university in Iraq.
