The Smart Pillow Supervised by Professor Dr. Ibrahim Abdullah Mardas This project represents an innovation in the field of "embedded systems" for medicine. The smart pillow aims to monitor the vital signs of patients (especially the elderly or those with respiratory and mobility issues) while they sleep or lie down, without the need for continuous human intervention. 1. Basic Working Principle The pillow relies on integrating a set of micro-sensors within its structure to detect two crucial vital indicators: • Respiration Rate: By monitoring pressure or subtle vibrations resulting from chest movement. • Patient Activity: By sensing the patient's movement or fluctuations, which helps predict anxiety or the risk of falling out of bed. 2. Technical Components • Microcontroller: Acts as the system's brain, processing data from the sensors. • Small OLED Screen: Displays vital readings directly (the image shows the BPM reading, indicating heart rate or respiratory rate). • TE Sensors: Your use of TE Connectivity sensors, renowned for their accuracy in pressure, temperature, and vibration, is evident. 3. Medical Objectives and Benefits • Early Alert: Provides an alert in case of sudden cessation of breathing or abnormal movement. • Reduced Nursing Effort: Automated patient monitoring replaces continuous manual monitoring. • Comfort: A major advantage is that the patient does not feel the devices (non-invasive), as they are concealed within the pillow, ensuring a comfortable sleep. This project is an invisible, intelligent monitoring system that integrates sensor technology and programming to ensure patient safety and provide real-time reports on their health status through an interactive medical pillow.
