The Department of Media at Al-Mustaqbal University organized an educational scientific seminar for its students in Hall (301), addressing the issue of extremism, violence, and terrorism, their repercussions on society, and the role of the media in confronting them.
The seminar was prepared by Assistant Professor Dr. Hamza Abis Abd Al-Sada, Lecturer Dr. Qasim Mahdi Hamza, and Lecturer Dr. Abdul-Kadhim Mohammed Haiq. Dr. Qasim Mahdi Hamza delivered a brief presentation highlighting the importance of holding such seminars within the department’s scientific plan, emphasizing their role in educating students in line with the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
Assistant Professor Dr. Hamza Abis Abd Al-Sada reviewed the concept of extremism from intellectual and social perspectives, clarifying the difference between extremism and strict opinion. He also outlined the various forms of extremism, including religious, political, and ideological extremism, in addition to discussing the reasons behind its spread, which range from psychological, social, and economic factors to media-related influences.
Lecturer Dr. Abdul-Kadhim Mohammed Haiq explained the pivotal role of the media in confronting extremism, noting that it can either act as a barrier against it or contribute to its spread within society. He stressed the importance of media responsibility in raising awareness, correcting misconceptions, avoiding the promotion of extremist discourse, and promoting values of tolerance, dialogue, and acceptance of others.
The seminar witnessed active discussions and interventions by faculty members of the Department of Media, focusing on mechanisms for countering extremist ideology, the role of educational and media institutions in intellectually protecting youth, and the impact of social media platforms on either spreading or combating extremism.
At the conclusion of the seminar, the organizers emphasized the importance of continuing to hold such scientific and educational activities, which contribute to raising students’ awareness and strengthening the university’s role in serving society and confronting negative phenomena.
