Engineer Hadeer Saleem explains that storing electrical energy using batteries is one of the most important modern technologies that has contributed to the development of energy systems, especially with the significant expansion in the use of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. These sources depend on natural conditions that may not be available all the time, such as sunlight or wind speed. Therefore, the need arises for a way to store the energy produced during times of abundance for later use when needed. Batteries operate on the principle of converting chemical energy into electrical energy through chemical reactions that occur inside them between the positive and negative electrodes in the presence of an electrolyte that allows the transfer of ions. When the battery is connected to an electrical circuit, electrons begin to move through the external circuit, generating an electric current that can be used to power various devices. The types of batteries used for energy storage vary according to their capacity, efficiency, and intended use. Lead-acid batteries are among the oldest types and are used in cars and emergency systems, while lithium-ion batteries are characterized by high energy density, light weight, and a longer operating life. Therefore, they have become the most widespread choice in electronic devices, electric cars, and home solar energy systems. The importance of battery energy storage extends beyond home use. It supports the stability of electrical grids, reduces outages, and balances production and consumption. Battery energy also contributes to decreasing reliance on traditional fuel stations and reducing harmful emissions. With ongoing technological advancements, research is currently focused on developing safer, more efficient, and longer-lasting batteries, such as solid-state batteries. This makes the future of electrical energy storage more sustainable and effective in meeting the world's growing energy needs. Al-Mustaqbal University, the leading university in Iraq.
