Diabetes is a common chronic disease that can affect children at an early age. It directly impacts the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels. Childhood diabetes is most commonly known as Type 1 Diabetes, which differs from adult-onset diabetes in its causes and treatment methods. What Is Diabetes in Children? Diabetes in children occurs when the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose enter the body’s cells to be used as energy. Without enough insulin, glucose builds up in the bloodstream, leading to high blood sugar levels and serious health problems if left untreated. Causes of Diabetes in Children The exact cause of Type 1 diabetes is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to: • An autoimmune reaction where the immune system attacks insulin-producing cells • Genetic factors • Environmental triggers such as viral infections Symptoms of Diabetes in Children Symptoms often appear suddenly and may include: • Excessive thirst • Frequent urination, especially at night • Unexplained weight loss • Constant fatigue • Blurred vision • Increased hunger Diagnosis Diabetes is diagnosed through blood tests, including: • Random blood glucose test • Fasting blood glucose test • Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test Treatment of Diabetes in Children Although there is no permanent cure for Type 1 diabetes, it can be effectively managed through: • Regular insulin injections • A healthy and balanced diet • Frequent blood sugar monitoring • Regular physical activity • Psychological and educational support for the child and family Living with Diabetes While diabetes cannot always be prevented, proper management and continuous medical care help children live a normal, active, and healthy life while reducing the risk of future complications.
