As part of its ongoing efforts to promote the values of moderation and tolerance and to enhance intellectual awareness among students, the Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics Engineering at the College of Engineering organized an awareness activity that included the distribution of an educational brochure titled “How Do We Confront Extremism.” The initiative targeted students from various colleges and departments across the university campus and was conducted under the supervision of Assist. Prof. Dr. Firas Thaer Raouf, Lecturer Maryam Ghassan Ghaffar, and Engineer Aya Talib Hassan, with the aim of raising awareness about the dangers of extremist ideologies and ways to prevent them. This initiative reflects the department’s academic and societal role in fostering a university environment based on moderation and intellectual openness, and in preparing a conscious generation capable of distinguishing between freedom of expression and hate speech, while valuing constructive dialogue and respect for cultural and intellectual diversity. The brochure provided a clear definition of extremism and highlighted its most prominent intellectual and behavioral manifestations, in addition to addressing its negative impact on individuals and society. It also emphasized the importance of critical thinking and the promotion of tolerance as essential tools to prevent being influenced by radical ideologies. The activity was attended by a number of faculty members and administrative staff, along with active participation from students of different colleges and departments. Brochures were distributed throughout the campus, and open discussions were encouraged to reinforce understanding and strengthen the awareness messages delivered. The event was held during the current academic week on the university campus as part of a series of awareness initiatives organized by the department in support of the university’s mission to build responsible youth awareness and a cohesive academic community.
