Scientific Workshop at Al-Mustaqbal University Discusses Privacy in Medical Data and Anonymization Techniques

Under the patronage of the President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, and under the direct supervision of the Dean of the College of Science, Assistant Professor Dr. Furat Hamza Al-Sultani, and with the follow-up and supervision of the Presidency of the Department of Intelligent Medical Systems, a scientific workshop entitled: “Privacy in Medical Data: Anonymization and Risk Reduction Methods” was held and delivered by Assistant Lecturer Qusay Munir Diab on Monday, 16/2/2026, in the presence of a number of faculty members and students of the College. The workshop aimed to highlight the importance of protecting sensitive health data, as it is among the most private and high-risk types of information when leaked or misused. It focused on the concept of anonymization as one of the fundamental approaches to reducing risks associated with sharing medical records and clinical data. The workshop also addressed the key techniques used to anonymize patient data, such as removing personal identifiers, encryption, and partial data masking. In addition, it discussed modern challenges related to the possibility of re-identification when analyzing big data or utilizing artificial intelligence technologies. Furthermore, the workshop included a scientific presentation on best practices and internationally recognized standards in health information security, as well as the importance of implementing risk management strategies to ensure the safe use of medical data in scientific research and digital health applications. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants emphasized the necessity of raising awareness regarding the security and privacy of health information and supporting projects and research that contribute to building secure intelligent medical systems that protect patient rights and enhance trust in digital healthcare services. This activity aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations, particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), reflecting the University’s commitment to developing responsible technological solutions in the healthcare sector. Al-Mustaqbal University is the first one university in Iraq.
