The concept of Naskh (abrogation) refers to the replacement of a legal ruling by a later revelation. This principle reflects the gradual method of legislation in early Islamic history.
However, scholars established strict conditions for recognizing abrogation:
A genuine and irreconcilable contradiction
Clear chronological sequence
Authentic textual evidence
The Andalusian scholar Ibn Hazm was particularly cautious in accepting claims of abrogation, arguing that reconciliation between texts should always be prioritized.
A balanced understanding of Naskh protects Qur’anic interpretation from exaggeration and ensures coherence within the legal system.
