One of the primary objectives of Islamic law is the establishment of justice and the preservation of human dignity, principles that are clearly affirmed in the objectives of the Qur’an across its various legislations. Equality in dignity and moral responsibility is a fundamental principle, while certain detailed rulings are linked to the nature of social and economic responsibilities within their historical context. Through the study of Asbab al-Nuzul (the occasions of revelation) and the historical context of the Qur’anic text, it becomes evident that many rulings were introduced to regulate an existing social reality—not to institutionalize discrimination—but rather to gradually guide society toward greater justice. Considering the maqasid-oriented (objectives-based) approach in understanding the Qur’anic text contributes to presenting a balanced perspective that demonstrates Islam’s harmony with the values of justice and fairness, while preserving its distinctive legislative framework. This contributes to achieving one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
