The Department of Medical Laboratory Techniques at the College of Health and Medical Technologies organized a scientific workshop entitled “Biochemistry of Hormones and Their Impact on Body Homeostasis.” The workshop was delivered by the Head of the Department, Lecturer Dr. Dhulfiqar Ahmed Hamza, in the presence of a number of faculty members and students. This event was held ضمن the framework of scientific activities aimed at strengthening academic knowledge and linking theoretical concepts with clinical applications in the field of medical laboratory sciences. At the beginning of the workshop, Dr. Hamza provided a comprehensive overview of hormones from a biochemical perspective, explaining their chemical nature and classification into peptide, steroid, and amine hormones. He also discussed their synthesis within endocrine glands and the regulation of their secretion through feedback mechanisms that contribute to maintaining the body’s internal balance (homeostasis). The lecture further addressed the molecular mechanisms of hormone action, clarifying how hormones bind to specific receptors located either on the cell surface or داخل the cell, and how they activate or inhibit intracellular signaling pathways. These processes play a crucial role in regulating various vital functions, including the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins, fluid and electrolyte balance, blood pressure regulation, as well as growth, reproduction, and responses to physiological and psychological stress. The workshop also provided a detailed explanation of common hormonal disorders, such as thyroid dysfunction, diabetes mellitus, and adrenal hormone imbalances, highlighting their underlying biochemical basis. Emphasis was placed on the essential role of medical laboratories in diagnosing these conditions through specialized tests, including hormone level measurements in blood, stimulation and suppression tests, and accurate interpretation of results within the patient’s clinical context. Moreover, the workshop shed light on the importance of proper sample collection, handling, and analysis, as well as the influence of various factors on laboratory results. This underscores the responsibility of laboratory professionals in delivering precise and reliable results that support medical decision-making. The workshop witnessed distinguished scientific interaction from attendees, with numerous questions and discussions that enriched the session and broadened students’ understanding of the significance of biochemistry in interpreting the complex physiological functions of the human body. At the conclusion of the workshop, emphasis was placed on the importance of continuing such scientific activities, as they contribute to raising academic standards and enhancing analytical thinking skills among students of the Department of Medical Laboratory Techniques, in line with modern developments in medical and laboratory sciences. Al-Mustaqbal University is the first university in Iraq Department of Medical Laboratory Techniques – First in the Iraqi National Ranking.
