As part of efforts to enhance scientific awareness and reinforce the principles of safe laboratory practice, Assistant Lecturer Hanadi Tahseen Muslim from the Department of Biochemistry, College of Science at Al-Mustaqbal University, organized a scientific workshop entitled “Laboratory Safety and Security” for third-year students. The workshop aimed to increase students’ awareness of the importance of adhering to safety procedures in both educational and research laboratories, and to emphasize the essential role of laboratory security standards in preventing accidents and reducing potential risks while handling chemicals and various laboratory equipment. The workshop addressed several key topics, including: • Introducing the concepts of laboratory safety and laboratory security, and clarifying the difference between them. • Classification of chemical, biological, and physical hazards within the laboratory. • Proper handling of hazardous materials and safe storage methods. • The importance of using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). • Required procedures in emergency situations such as chemical spills or fires. The workshop also witnessed excellent interaction from students through scientific discussions and questions, reflecting their commitment to correctly applying safety standards in the practical aspect of their studies. This workshop comes as part of the Department of Biochemistry’s scientific activities aimed at strengthening students’ practical skills and preparing them according to solid scientific foundations that keep pace with academic and professional standards.
