Eczema is a common skin disease that can affect different age groups. It is characterized by redness, severe skin dryness, and irritating itching, and in some cases may be accompanied by skin cracking or peeling. Eczema is considered a chronic condition that may persist for long periods and appears in recurrent attacks with varying severity. Eczema occurs due to several factors, most notably genetic factors and weakness of the skin’s natural barrier, in addition to hypersensitivity to external triggers such as dust, perfumes, and chemical detergents. Psychological stress and tension also play a role in increasing symptom severity. Climatic changes influence eczema as well, since symptoms usually worsen during winter due to skin dryness. Symptoms of eczema vary and include persistent itching, redness, swelling, and the appearance of small blisters that may sometimes release fluid and later turn into skin crusts. These symptoms commonly appear in specific body areas such as the hands, face, neck, and skin folds, including behind the knees and elbows. Treatment of eczema aims to control and reduce symptoms through the use of medical moisturizers to maintain skin hydration and the application of therapeutic creams prescribed by a specialist physician. It is also recommended to avoid substances that irritate the skin, take showers using lukewarm water instead of hot water, wear cotton clothing, and stay away from stress and anxiety as much as possible. In conclusion, eczema is an annoying skin disease; however, following medical advice and proper skin care helps reduce symptoms and improve the quality of life for patients.
